A look at last week…

IMG_6903

We practicing reading and sorting the days of the week each day last week. They are getting much better! Thursday and Tuesday and Saturday and Sunday are still tricky ones. Even with the clues and tricks they have been told.. it will just take lots of practice.

These cards are from my Superhero Theme Set.

A few years ago I started saving water bottle tops and I bought small alphabet round stickers in the Target Dollar spot.. they fit on the bottle tops perfect! I have three sets and they are the perfect little time filler.

We are still ordering numbers DAILY! I thought we had it pretty much conquered but  .. not so much. So, we will continue to practice. I just divide my cat number cards into several groups and hand them out. They grab a set and go someone in the room they can spread out.

These are my Cat Countin Cards.

I introduced my firsties to the game scoot a few weeks ago. They caught on perfectly! They are so quiet and stay on task while moving that I have tried to play several times a week. They know when they come in and there is card taped on their desk a game is coming up soon. I don’t number my cards but we use their class numbers instead. So they know to look at the number then the card when they sit down. It gets them up moving and learning at the same time. It is definitely a win win situation. It works great when we need a little break.

We read the room again this week- and used short a words. They had to find the words and when they were done come read them to me. Another movement + learning activity.

These cards are from my –an family unit.

We finished up our Cat/Pete unit mid week so I put away the cat counting cards. I pulled out these cute little chevron square cards. In small groups I would call out a number and they had to find it. While they were waiting on their turn they were putting them in order at the top of the pocket chart.

One of the skills we concentrated hard on this week was number words. Right now I only “test” them on words zero-ten. But, anytime we practice I include words up to twenty. They pick them up so quickly. I desperately needed a new no-frills number chart. Thanks to Labor Day – it was one of many to-do projects that got done!

Here is a link to download the number cards for free if you want to make your own.. nothing fancy for sure!

We celebrated a new month this week with printables from my Months of the Year unit. We do these at the beginning of each month. They are perfect for identifying the word September.

We FINALLY finished up our Pete pictures. These have been in the works for almost a week. I took the words off my hall bulletin board but left the pom poms and put up Pete words. This Pete art project was from Deanna Jump several years ago. It is now in her Colorful Cats Unit.

Next week is all about Dogs and especially Clifford! We are be working on capital letters, days of the week, short a, rhyming words, ordinal words, number words , place value (ones and tens places), calendar skills and so much more! A few resources I will be using…

Sight Words

004

One of the projects that I wanted to do this summer was work on my sight word program and re-do some things. I felt like I needed to make a few changes and also make it more consistent.

I use Fry Words- and have used this book as a guideline for many years.

I finished this HUGE PROJECT this past weekend and I am just thrilled with the way it turned out. I went to my school this morning and copied the first 15 weeks of the unit so I will be set to go almost until Christmas time! It didn’t take long to prepare today but it will save me tons of time having it done.

I listed the unit in my store

Doodle Bugs: Sight Word Unit

Here is more info about the unit.

I used Fry’s list and used the first 300 words plus I added in color words, number words, days of the week and months of the year.

006

The unit includes weekly flash cards for all the words. The picture above shows just the first 15 words which is about 1/2 of the unit.

I choose to copy my flashcards on colored cardstock but you could use white paper or even construction paper.

007

Also included are weekly word list. The list is formatted 2 per page just to save copies. I will use these word list in small groups or for center activities.

008

I copied the first 15 weeks and went ahead and cut them apart so they will be ready.

Every week I give a weekly assessment. The assessment includes the 10 words for that week plus 5 words randomly picked from the weeks before. {except for the color word list because that is the first week of words.}

010

The box on the left is what the student looks at when reading the words.

The box on the right is what I mark when I test the student.

013

Also included in the unit are review assessments.

There is a sheet with all the words to review, the assessment and also the student version.

The student version is the paper the student reads from while I mark on the other sheet.

012

This unit is 141 pages long and has all the flash cards, weekly word list, weekly assessments and review assessments for Fry’s first 300 words, 10 basic color words, number words zero-twenty, Days of the Week and Months of the Year.

We only have 13 days between after Thanksgiving Break and Christmas Break so I choose the 13 sheets that will be the best for my first graders to do and went ahead and prepped them all at once. {It is so handy to have them completely done!} I just pull one each morning and have it sitting on their desk for them to work when they get to the room.

IMG_7851

I print the “pieces” or the paper the students have to cut on colored paper. This is not necessary AT ALL but I like the pieces on a different colored paper than the background paper.

IMG_7849     IMG_7852

I also copied a few extra of these sheets to tuck into my “extra work folder” for when I need a spur of the moment time filler or if I have to be out unexpectedly they can be used for sub-work.
