Halloween Pocket Chart Math Acitivites

I am a HUGE HUGE fan of pocket charts and we use them multiple times through out the day.

We use them in small groups and during center rotations. 

But, I also use them as early finisher activities. 

And, I have TONS of different activities but I seriously can always use more. 

So, I made this little pocket chart unit to use for the month of October. 

There are 8 different activities to use in this unit. 

Here is a look...

Number Words- zero-twenty match. These can also be used at a table or on the floor. I frequently run out of pocket charts (even with 4 permanent ones and 2 tabletops ones) so these are easily used anywhere!

Counting by 5's: Numbers 5-300 are included. I don't plan to have all my students count to 300. Just pick and use what numbers best fit your students.

Ten Frame Counting: We are working so hard on counting tens & ones. 

These will be a perfect fit for the next few weeks.

Even and Odd Sorting: These fit great in a pocket chart but can easily be used in baskets too. One of the reasons I love a pocket chart is how easily I can do a quick glance to check the students work. But, just like I mentioned above.. sometimes space is limited so I use these little buckets/baskets from the dollar tree with the header cards taped to the front.

Addition Math Facts: We seriously practice math facts in some sort each day. Why not make it hands on and a more engaging than a fact sheet. These little witch cards are so cute!

Counting by 10's. Numbers 10-300 are included. You might only want to use numbers up to 100 or 120 .. or 200. Pick and choose what works best for you classroom.

Ordering Numbers: It seems like I am always pulling out some counting cards and just randomly pick some for my students to order from least to greatest. These little silly monsters will be a hit for sure!

Greater or Less Than Sort: These can also be used in a pocket chart or those same little Dollar Tree buckets I mentioned with the even and odd cards. 

I often get request for me to make some of my items in black and white. I know not everyone wants to print in color {or has that option} so I included black and white versions of all the cards so you can have your choice.

Halloween Pocket Chart Math Activities

October.. What I’ll be teaching!

October will be here next week. And, it is one of my favorite months so I am definitely ready! I love the “themes” I teach in October and I also think that it is the month that we FINALLY can say we have mastered {most} of our classroom routines. You can probably hear my sigh of relief. I KNOW you understand too!

I also believe that October is a great month to fit in a little Social Studies and Science. Fire Safety and Columbus Day are perfect Social Studies units. .. and we can definitely fill lots of time with non-fiction learning of bats, spiders and skeletons.

And, I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the fun of Halloween. The cutesy part.. not the scary. You will never find anything scary with me but you better believe I overdo the cuteness of jack-o-lanterns, candy corn, costumes and more!

I looked back through some pictures on my computer and found a few fun things I have done in the past with my first graders.

These little spiders were always a big hit. Our cafeteria has these little styrofoam cups and all you need are wiggly eyes, pipe cleaners and black beads. I haven’t made these in several years but they are cute and easy!

We made these glass jack-o-lantern luminary jars one year. They are covered with tissue paper and have green raffia tied at the top. We put candles inside. Cute! Cute!

This ghost bulletin board and hall display is one of my favorites. The white sheet on each ghost lifts up and there is a picture under each one. Such a cute idea.

Very simple jack-o-lanterns with handprints for the leaves.

Yarn pumpkins. These always turn out cute and each have their own personalities.

Directed drawing bats- a cute and super easy {and fast} bulletin board idea.

A look back at last week

 

These ghost math facts were one of our math centers this week. They are definitely “old school” before everything was computer generated. But, I keep and use what works.

Another math center were these fill in the  missing number cards.

Halloween ABC order. I folded the paper to make six boxes and they wrote a word in each box and illustrated.

This math center is old too.. I have probably used it for the last 10 years. The boxes with the pictures came from this book. In the book the pictures were made for something else .. not counting. So, I turned it into a counting center. I I made the recording sheet.

Some mornings when we are on the mat for the first time.. I try and do a pocket chart activity that will be used as an independent activity sometimes that week. It’s a good way for me to introduce the activity and model how I want them to do it. One of the pocket chart activities we did this week was an even and odd sort. I used my Chevron Counting Cards and just made quick even and odd header sheets for the top.

We practiced tally marks one day this week.

One time filler activity that I do are these little reading stories. I write the stories on a piece of paper and put it on the board using the Elmo. (My phone caught a glare so some of the words are not showing up.) I have my students read the story to themselves. Then I give them a small piece of paper. They have to number to five and I ask them five simple questions. The questions I asked this time were:

{1}  What is the girl’s name? {2} Was the pot hot? {3} What is in the pot? {4} What color is the pot"? {5} When will they eat?

While I was doing sight word assessments this week I had the rest of the class working on these short o unscrambling sentences.

We are still working through my Halloween Math Sheets as morning work. I really hope to finish the Thanksgiving version this week.

The last thing we did Friday afternoon before leaving for the weekend was to unscramble and put together our weekly Bible verse with a friend. I paired everyone up and they cut the words and glued them in order to make our verse.

I showed these candy corn guys in my Five for Friday post and had several emails and comments about the patterns. I made these but I don’t have them to share! So sorry.. but seriously, I drew them by hand one morning before school. Nothing fancy. All you need is a rounded triangle, shoes, hands and circles for the eyes! I cut strips of black paper for them to fold accordion style for the arms and legs.

Halloween Centers

Halloween is just around the corner.. literally! How in the world can it be time? Seems like we just started school yesterday- and BAM! It’s Halloween!

A week or so ago- I listed my newest unit.. Halloween Centers and Activities in my store. It really is a fun unit and I can not wait to use more of these activities with kids in the next few weeks.
