Summer Lovin’

summersunday

I know most of the world is not out for summer break yet.. and I don’t mean to “rub it in” but I am loving every minute of mine. I got out Thursday afternoon and I have enjoyed the last three days.

I love a Sunday afternoon that doesn’t require lesson planning and getting ready for Monday morning!

First stop- the library. I have a kindle but there is nothing like a real book in your hands. I stopped in our local library Friday morning and picked up a few books. I need some book suggestions. No murder mysteries, historical fiction or sci-fi stuff.

Years ago a good teacher friend told me her “secret” to not wasting a summer day!

Make a daily and weekly five list and stick to it.

Each day list five things you need to get done that day.

Also make a weekly list of five things that doesn’t matter what day you get them done but you know sometimes this week you have to do them.

There is nothing I love more than a to-do list I can mark off.

You can click the picture above to download my to-do list form.

I have started working a little bit on designing some new stuff. I just redid my superhero classroom theme pack. If you have all ready purchased it- you can download it again for all the new additions. I might just have a superhero theme next year!!!

  1. Thank you for that to-do list. I will use it faithfully this summer to not allow another summer to slip away.

  3. This list is totally brilliant!!! I am printing it right now! There's only one problem with the 5...and that I have 5 weeks left 'til I can use it!! :) :)

    Thanks so much!

  8. Lucky you! I have 14 days left! I understand about getting "real" books to read. I have a kindle as well, but just stopped at the bookstore last week and picked up a new read. :)

  9. I am so jealous!!!

I have a book suggestion for you: It's called "Room."

I'm not saying anything about it, other than you MUST read it! You won't regret it! It's like nothing you have ever read before!

  11. Ask and ye shall receive ...
(Although you mentioned three of my favorite genres as no-nos ... ah, well. Every book has it's reader.)

And yes, my suggestions are mostly "kid" lit or YA lit. But they are still VERY well written.

    Fic
Wonder (RJ Palacio). Realistic fiction and a wonderful "kids" book on compassion that even grown ups should read.
The One and Only Ivan (Katherine Applegate). Talking animals but still wonderful. Very similar in terms of compassion ... and based on a real gorilla that used to live in a mall in WA state.
Gallagher Girls or Heist Society series (both by Ally Carter). Total fluffy fun but seriously. What is summer for but popcorn reading? Read them in order!
A Long Walk to Water (Linda Sue Park) SO good. Two points of view/time periods. About the lost boys of the Sudan and the fact that a good portion of the world doesn't have easy access to clean water.
Marty McGuire (Kate Messner) Books one and two. Could be a read aloud for first grade. Or, even, read independently by strong readers. Fun character ... think sort of like Junie B but with better grammar. Or Clementine. Author used to teach but is now a full time writer.

    NonFic
    Amelia Lost
    Mrs. Harkness and the Panda

And I could go one but I am already feeling like I'm being overwhelming.

  12. I'm with you 100% when it comes to reading a REAL book vs. one on a kindle/nook/ipad! I am also in L.O.V.E. with your weekly/daily 5 idea you shared. I think that will be a must and a great way to ensure that in addition to relaxing and enjoying myself, I will also we somewhat productive. I am pretty sure that on a couple of those days... I might possibly put "nap" down on the to-do list! :)

  16. I've thought about getting a Kindle too, but it just isn't the same as having a book in your hands which is what keeps me reading!

Even though we're 5 weeks from a short 2 week break here in Australia, I've downloaded your awesome to-do list so I can plan out each day of my two week break :) I love it. Thank you
